Making Love Stick
September 12/13: "Just Like the Movies"
Big Idea: LOVE is not a noun, it's a verb. It's an action, not a feeling.
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” (John 13:34)
Summary:
We are equipped to fall in love, but we are not equipped to stay in love. For one, the feelings don't last. The "shelf life" on in-loveness is about 18 months according to the experts, so beyond that, what do we do?
“Love one another” sounds so basic, but more here than meets the eye: Jesus takes something that is a noun (love) and makes it a verb. We fall in love (noun) and Jesus tells us that the key to staying in love is to love (verb) one another.
You don't have to believe in Jesus spiritually to be compelled by the story of His life. His life was all about love. Jesus is the greatest lover of all time. We've got to start this series by asking ourselves, "Am I willing to take Jesus on as my love coach? As my role model for how to go about this crazy little thing called love. Am I willing to say, "When I fall in love, I'm gonna make love stick by loving him/her as He has loved me." Do we know how He has loved us? Is that real to us in a personal way? That's when it moves beyond coaching and input and strategy to something WAY deeper. In this service we'll help people consider Jesus as their counselor, role model, and personal director in areas of love. If I'm single, I listen to Him from now on. If I'm married, I listen to Him from now on. I take my cues from Him because He's not just the most loving person in the world, He's also the one who has loved me like He has loved me.
